The Milestones Project
Stanford Center on Longevity and Fidelity Investments surveyed Americans across generations to compare the ages they ideally want to reach major life milestones with when they actually do. The hook was a counterintuitive finding: Millennials are not abandoning the American Dream — they are struggling to afford it, despite holding remarkably similar ambitions to older generations.
Why it worked: It reframed a tired “lazy millennials” trope with clean ideal-vs-actual age gaps and brand-new charts journalists could localize and headline.
The lesson: Consider fielding a brief survey that quantifies expectation-vs-outcome gaps, then package the delta as a visual, state-rankable story.
