The American Nature & Health Survey
REI Co-op and the Nature and Health Alliance surveyed more than 3,000 Americans to show how little time people spend outdoors, then uncovered a useful hook: 83% would go outside more if their doctor recommended it, compared with just 20% who had received that advice. The findings gave REI a credible platform for promoting nature as part of everyday healthcare, alongside its short documentary series, The Nature Dose.
Why it worked: Original national data with a counterintuitive gap (83% would follow a doctor’s “nature prescription,” only 20% got one) created a healthcare-tied news hook and clear headline.
The lesson: Consider fielding a simple, nationally representative poll that exposes a fixable gap between expert advice and real-world practice, then offer the remedy.
