Time Out and Intrepid Travel surveyed more than 24,000 locals, then combined the results with expert votes to rank the world’s best nightlife cities. The hook was spotlighting Johannesburg and Accra as unexpected African nightlife capitals, with their distinctive venues, communities and subcultures brought to life.

Why it worked: A big, proprietary ranking using 24,000-local survey data plus editor votes created a counterintuitive listicle that elevated undercovered cities.

The lesson: Consider fielding a large, credible poll, then crown unexpected leaders and package it as a ranked, embargoed list with local color.
