One Car Challenge
LA Metro launched the “One Car Challenge”, offering residents up to $600 to leave at least one car unused for five weeks. The initiative was brought to life through real stories of Angelenos trying to walk, cycle and use public transport in a city built around driving.
Why it worked: It piggybacked a hard news policy (cash incentive, timeline, dollar amount) with human vignettes showing daily tradeoffs, creating a city-identity tension.
The lesson: Consider pairing a concrete, time-bound cash offer with contrasting first-person diaries that reveal system flaws and unexpected wins.
