Fermi Explorer: The 80,000-Year Mission
Starcloud’s founders launched Fermi Explorer, a non-profit mission proposing to send a one-kilogram spacecraft towards Alpha Centauri on an 80,000-year journey. Rather than inventing breakthrough propulsion, the deliberately absurd hook is to use existing technology and invite partners, donors, scientists and artists to help create humanity’s first object explicitly aimed at another star.
Why it worked: It flipped the Moonshot trope: a “minimum viable mission” using off-the-shelf tech and an 80,000-year timeline, creating a counterintuitive, history-making first.
The lesson: Consider pitching a “minimum viable moonshot” that uses today’s tools to claim a bold first and invites public contributions to shape it.
