Prosthetic Users Teach Robot Hands
Psyonic plans to give prosthetic hands to users in Pakistan and India and pay them to go about their everyday lives. The hands will capture how people grip and handle objects, creating tactile data to train robot hands—with the hope that selling the resulting models will help subsidise the prosthetics.
Why it worked: It flipped data collection into paid, dignified work, using a hardware giveaway to generate rare, high-value tactile datasets at scale.
The lesson: Consider paying real-world users to create scarce training data as they live their lives, then productize the model—not the data.
